New Arrivals & Product Categories

Since its launch, the Want experience has focused more on the product reference side - organization through collections, continual improvements to the bookmarklet, etc. Now that the fundamentals have been designed and developed, we feel it’s time to build out what we believe will be the true essence of Want - product discovery.

The first iteration of this is called ‘New Arrivals’ and takes the place of Trending. The problem with Trending is that it highlights the same stores and same products over and over again, due to our merchant button on high traffic online stores (Sharperimage.com). New Arrivals will show the most recent products added from the community - bookmarklet, button, ReWant - with no emphasis (for now) on popularity. This will feature a more diverse group of items/stores and also display the people behind the finds. We are also adding popular shopping categories (Apparel, Accessories, Shoes, Art, etc) to this view as a high-level way to organize the 1000s of daily products added. Here is an overview of how it works…

All recently added products.

Toggle between products found by the community vs people you follow.

Category drop-down as a sorting mechanism.

One-time tagging to a category in the Bookmarklet flow.

Feeback:

If there is any feedback on these updates let us know. The one concern we have is the extra step on the Bookmarklet flow. We just thought the benefits of increased product discovery for the Want community and another sorting mechanism for groups of products (eventually these categories will be throughout the site on pages like your profile, search results, etc) outweighed the one-time category selection process. Any other ideas for how to increase discovery and browsing on the site let us know.

Client: Want  Project: Business Cards
Something you don’t see everyday is what we do - everyday. Want came to us with the idea of an avant garde business card that embodies their entire business -www.wanttt.com.
Want is a social window-shopping experience. Users can ‘WANT’ various unusual yet cool items. Want allows people to discover products they’ve probably never seen before, share them with people of similar taste, and discover new stores or outlets to actually purchase the items.
There are many sites and blogs that post cool items one can never actually own, but want steps in and actually provides an awesome opportunity: Connecting unique individuals with unique products that they’ll love. I’m personally waiting for the Back to the Future Sneakers (hint, hint).
The business card is printed on a 16pt cardstock with a spot UV coating. The hangtag shape is a non-standard shape, but it was well worth the effort finding a printer even capable of doing the job!
We’re very pleased with the end product and the client loved their unique business card! Check out wanttt.com, it’s a really cool site.

Featured Interview: Artisanal Ansatz

New section in the Want Daily - Featured Interviews. Basically a behind the scenes look at some of our favorite consumer brands. Our first conversation is with Stefan from Parisian clothing company Artisanal Ansatz. Artisanal appeared on the scene only 3 months ago, but their line of t-shirts have quickly become a must-have. Their shirts pay tribute to world renowned artists (musicians, filmmakers, fashion directors) - using only a ballpoint pen and a dash of surrealism.

Where did the idea for Artisanal Ansatz come from?

The idea started very simply! Two friends of mine and I were in the Paris train station. We had like 40 minutes to wait for our train. I took my notebook and asked my friend to draw famous figures but only in 5 lines ! It was funny because we had only 5 steps of drawings to make our friends guess. That’s how Artisanal Ansatz was born!

What’s the process like for choosing the next figure to portray ?

We choose figures that we really like and appreciate, depending on the artists carreer. This brand of t-shirts was made to make people smile. We can feel the economic crisis all around the world so if we can make people smile, even with a simple caricature, that would be great

Any influence from other artists that went into the drawings?

Innocent way of drawing like kids! Kids are artists!

What is the meaning of Ansatz?

Ansatz is used in Physics and mathematics and refers to a “postulate”. A kind of fundamental. Because it was the beginning!

You guys mention arte povera on your Facebook page - curious to what that is?

Arte povera is an artistic current appearing in the 60’s. You can translate it into “Poor art”This artistic current defends the way of creating and not the final piece.Because we started with one pen and one sheet of paper! But the paradox is that we didn’t choose it! We were really poor! (One blue ink, white Tshirt only!)

The line is focused on musicians, filmmakers, fashion designers, and artists. Any plans to move into other categories -  athletes, business leaders, world leaders?

We were thinking about drawing Dennis Rodman… World leaders, why not!

Probably an impossible question to answer - but which of the portrayals is your favorite? Personally love the Amy Winehouse tribute - she is one of our idols.

Thank you! My favorite one is not for sale… secret!

Any plans to sell the line in U.S. stores?

Soon we hope!

Any other clothing categories planned?

Only white T-shirt! Grey jumpers and maybe bags!

Probably can’t reveal but have to ask - any figures in particular you are thinking about illustrating next?

We’ll see on time. A funny one for sure!

Last question - do you ever make custom pieces?  Would love to do a Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, or Steve Jobs.

One day maybe :-)

Many thanks to Stefan and all the folks at Artisanal Ansatz for the interview. Really enjoyed the insight. No doubt the brand will continue to flourish.

Below is the teaser Artisanal Ansatz released for their launch + some of our favorite pieces from their collection.
